Pumps
There are two basic types of filter pumps: Inground and Above ground

 An Inground pump typically is self priming ( the ability to lift water Up from the pool and purge air from the pump housing ) and can produce more pressure to overcome head resistance.
 This type of pump should be used in:
  Any pool Larger then 20,000 Gallons   
                 Any Pool where the filter system is located above the water level

       Any pool that sees extreme use or conditions.

         Any  Filter system that risk's air entering the pump

High Head pumps
 If the filter system Is more then 4 feet above the pool Level  or has back-pressure classed by water features or spa jets should use a HIGH HEAD type inground pump. A HIGH HEAD pump has the ability to lift water further and back pressure caused by fountains, spa-jet, pressure side pool cleaners, floor mounted pool cleaning systems ( caretaker ect.) and inadequate plumbing.
This type of pump SHOULD NOT BE USED when the filter or plumbing cannot withstand higher pressure
